The Apostle
12th Disciple After Judas Betrayed
Matthias is an easy apostle to forget. He’s mentioned in Acts 1:23-26 and then is essentially forgotten—but not gone. While the Bible is void of Matthias, he had a very active ministry.
We know that Matthias, while not an original disciple, was with Jesus during his ministry; it was one of the requirements for being chosen—he had to be an eyewitness of Jesus and see the resurrection. This is what we know with absolute certainty. From here, we have to start leaning a lot on tradition.
Tradition tells us that he did a lot of church planting in what is now Turkey and Georgia. Again, according to tradition, he was stoned to death in Georgia. There is a marker for his grave in Georgia, but that does not necessarily mean that’s where he’s buried—there are lots of claims about where disciples were buried. There are also claims that he was stoned in Jerusalem and as well as what is now Turkey.
About the only thing anyone seems to agree with is that he died a martyr.
