The Apostle
Thomas doubted. That’s what the Bible tells us. That’s what he’s remembered for. And that’s a shame because Thomas did so much more than doubt—realistically, that’s the least he should be remembered for. But Thomas probably wouldn’t mind much, because it was as a result of that doubt that he accomplished so much. He lived the rest of his days doubting no more.
Some believe that Thomas was the twin brother of Matthew; his name, Thomas, means twin, so it’s easy to believe that he was the twin of someone. Some also believe that Matthew was the prodigal son in the parable that Jesus tells; if that’s true, then Thomas was the brother who stayed home—who was cautious, which fits his personality.
Thomas is remembered by Catholics as being present at the assumption of Mary—a doctrine Protestants do not traditionally accept—where, according to legends, Thomas was in India when he was transported to her tomb to witness her assumption into Heaven.
It’s widely accepted that Thomas was a missionary in India until his death; in fact, he traveled perhaps more than any other disciple.
Some of the earliest apocryphal writings have born Thomas’ name; while the writings are too late to be included in the Bible, they do tell us how interested people were in the life of this doubter.
Most believe that Thomas died as a Martyr in India.
