The Apostle
Peter is the rock. The leader of the early Christian church—even the first Pope, if you are a Catholic. It is generally accepted that Peter wrote the first epistle of Peter, but the second is more debatable. Because the Gospel of Mark seems to have a Peter tone to it, it was originally thought to have been written by Peter’s traveling companion, Mark; today, most scholars accept that there’s no way to know who wrote the Gospel.
During Pentecost, it’s Peter who gives the first sermon in all Christianity. Peter is fierier than ever, and it’s clear who’s going to lead the early movement of believers.
As passionate as Peter was to lead the church, he was slower to change it. He wasn’t quite happy at first with how Gentiles should be treated; and he wasn’t as far traveled as some of the other apostles. He’s mostly seen managing the church.
Peter was martyred. Traditionally in Rome, but that most likely was not the case. Most believe it was ordered by Nero after the great fire of 64. Some legends say upside down, but this is most likely not true.
